Yesterday, the Supreme Court delivered a massive ruling that will undoubtedly shake up the markets. In a 6 to 3 decision, the Court struck down the sweeping global tariffs imposed by President Trump. The justices ruled that he exceeded his authority by using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, stating clearly that the Constitution assigns taxing power to Congress.

Here is exactly what this means for us and the broader economy:

• The immediate impact: The broad tariffs enacted last year, including the blanket Liberation Day levies, are officially invalid.

• What remains in play: Sector specific tariffs implemented under different trade laws, such as those on steel and aluminium, are completely unaffected and remain active.

• The looming legal battle: The Supreme Court did not decide whether the government must refund the billions of dollars already collected. This guarantees a massive fight in lower courts as businesses scramble to get their money back.

• The next move: The administration is not backing down. President Trump criticized the ruling and announced plans to impose a new 10% global tariff using Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which permits temporary tariffs for up to 150 days.

Pete’s view:

1. 👌 No big deal : Trump can still implement tariffs through other means, which he already did.

2. 🛍️ Sectors to benefit : Retail and Consumer Goods sector are likely to benefit from this temporary 10% tariffs instead of the indefinite ones. Mega cap tech names like Apple, Alphabet, and Amazon are also likely to benefit,

3. 🪝 Opportunities: This will no doubt increase volatility so definitely looking at that for my SMG members and also DMG for income purposes!
