Here is what we know as of this morning. Iran has begun laying mines in the world's most important energy chokepoint. A few dozen have already been placed in recent days. The US military responded fast, destroying 16 Iranian mine-laying vessels near the Strait on Tuesday. Trump threatened consequences "at a level never seen before" if Iran continued.

Iran's response? Tehran vowed it will not allow "one liter of oil" to leave the Middle East until US and Israeli attacks stop.

Here is what most people do not understand about mines. Bombs destroy things. Mines linger. 

Such mining would be just as effective as a blockade, raising insurance rates and stopping ships from entering the Persian Gulf entirely. Even after a ceasefire, professional mine-clearing is slow, dangerous work that can take weeks or months. The Strait does not reopen the moment a peace deal is signed.

There are currently about 400 oil and product tankers sitting idle in the Gulf right now. 400 tankers. Going nowhere.

This is not a short-term oil spike anymore. This is a structural disruption to the global energy supply that could last well beyond the war itself.
