It’s been a rough week in the markets. Red everywhere. Indices tumbling. Fear creeping back into headlines.

Let’s rewind the tape.

In 2008, fear ruled. Banks collapsed, portfolios halved, and it felt like capitalism itself was cracking. Yet those who held on or even bought through the panic saw their investments multiply in the decade that followed.

Go back further to the Dot-com crash in 2000. Tech stocks vaporized overnight. Amazon fell over 90% (this was very painful for me). Most thought it was done for. Today, that same Amazon sits hundreds of times higher, turning patient investors into millionaires.

Even in March 2020, when COVID shut down the world, the S&P 500 plunged 34% in weeks. Those who stayed invested, or better yet, rebalanced and bought quality assets, watched one of the fastest recoveries in history.

What’s Happening Now

Markets are once again reminding us of a timeless truth: risk never disappears; it only shifts.

We’ve seen high valuations, geopolitical tension, inflation pressures, and uncertain rates all converge. The correction we’re seeing is not random. It’s the market resetting expectations.

One simply cannot expect prices to keep going up without any pullback.

And this is exactly why I’ve been emphasizing insurance and hedges, not as fear tactics, but as smart portfolio design.

When I talk about gold in Oct, it’s not because it’s exciting. It’s because it’s steady.
When I mention portfolio insurance, it’s because protecting your downside keeps you in the game long enough to enjoy the upside.
